Hi, could you please direct me towards the porn section?

April 9, 2006

DROSEblogger posted some interesting ideas on obscene material in libraries. However, is it necessary to have this stuff in libraries? Libraries, mind you, that are paid for with local taxes. I’d say probably not. It doesn’t go against the first amendment! We’re not censoring the author’s right to say what he wants. If you want to read, or see, Jon Stewart’s book you can buy it. No one is stopping the sale of the book. To me, this is not a violation of rights. Many libraries around the country are already struggling to stay open because of funding, who has money to hire a clerk to “watch” who is looking at obscene material? Are we going to ID people who try to pick up the books? What happens to a library if they are caught allowing a 16 year old to look at an inappropriate book? Come on, out of all the battles we have in front of us, such as child pornography, are we really going to concentrate on getting naked pictures into libraries? Let’s get real.
